Semaglutide
FlexTouch Pen (injectable)
Wegovy is a prescription weight loss injection containing semaglutide, a synthetic version of a hormone your body naturally produces after eating. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight management in the UK, and recommended by NICE for adults with obesity.
It comes as a pre-filled FlexTouch pen that you inject once a week. Each pen contains four doses, giving you a month's supply per pen.
Wegovy belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone released by your gut after eating, which signals to your brain that you are full and slows the rate at which your stomach empties.
By mimicking this hormone, Wegovy:
Reduces appetite so you feel satisfied with smaller portions
Slows gastric emptying so you feel fuller for longer after meals
Quietens food noise, the persistent thoughts and cravings around food that make dieting difficult
Helps regulate blood sugar, which reduces energy spikes and crashes that trigger snacking
The result is a natural, sustainable reduction in calorie intake without the willpower battle of conventional diets. Wegovy works best when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
Wegovy is started at a low dose and increased gradually every four weeks. This titration approach allows your body to adjust to the medication and significantly reduces the risk and severity of side effects, particularly nausea.
You should never increase your dose faster than the schedule below. If you experience side effects that are difficult to manage, you can stay at your current dose for longer before moving up. Speak to our Phlo Clinic Patient Care Team for guidance.

Clinical studies have shown that combined with a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise, you can lose up to 5% of your bodyweight in the first 3 months. That increases to up to 20.7%* of your bodyweight within 18 months if you maintain treatment long term.

Clinical evidence is robust. In the landmark STEP trials, patients taking Wegovy 2.4mg alongside lifestyle changes lost an average of 14.9% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks.

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are clinically proven GLP-1 weight loss injections, and switching between them is more common than many people realise. There are several legitimate reasons to make the move.

from Mounjaro to Wegovy:
Cost: Wegovy can be more cost effective compared to Mounjaro, making it a more affordable option for long-term treatment
Side effects: Some patients find tirzepatide (Mounjaro) causes more pronounced gastrointestinal side effects and tolerate semaglutide (Wegovy) better
Cardiovascular health: Wegovy has a specific MHRA approval for reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with established heart disease, which may make it the clinically preferred choice for some patients
Personal preference: The FlexTouch pen format suits some patients better than the KwikPen
Both medications work by mimicking GLP-1, a gut hormone that reduces appetite and slows gastric emptying. Mounjaro additionally mimics GIP (a second hormone), which is thought to enhance appetite suppression. Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy does not mean starting from scratch; our clinical team will recommend an equivalent Wegovy dose based on where you are in your Mounjaro treatment.

Like all medications, Wegovy can cause side effects. Most are mild to moderate, tend to occur when first starting treatment or after a dose increase, and improve as your body adjusts. The gradual dose escalation schedule is specifically designed to minimise their impact.
These are the most frequently reported and almost always settle within the first few weeks:
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhoea or constipation
Stomach pain or discomfort
Headache
Fatigue or feeling weak
