What are Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, and work by mimicking a natural hormone that signals to your brain when you're full, helping to reduce appetite and how much you eat.

The key difference from the injection is simply that the tablet is taken once-daily instead of a once-weekly injection. The tablet of course means no needles and there is also no refrigeration required.

Wegovy tablets were approved by the FDA in December 2025 and became available in the US from January 2026. UK approval is expected later in 2026, subject to review by the MHRA. Phlo Clinic will offer them as soon as they become available.

What are they?

Tablet-based weight loss treatments

Contain a GLP-1 receptor agonist (the same active ingredient as Wegovy)

Taken once daily orally, rather than once weekly by injection

Clinically tested with results comparable to injectable options

Why are people interested?

A non-injectable alternative for those who prefer not to use a pen

Easier to fit into everyday life for some people

No refrigeration or injection equipment required

The same clinically-led approach, in a simpler format

How effective are Wegovy tablets?

What the evidence shows

In the OASIS 4 phase 3 trial (a 64-week study of 307 adults with obesity or overweight) people taking Wegovy tablets lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight, compared to 2.2% on placebo. Results were comparable to those seen with the Wegovy injection in earlier trials, suggesting the tablet delivers similar clinical benefit despite the different delivery method.

Are Wegovy tablets safe to take?

Wegovy tablets have a well-established safety profile, consistent with semaglutide in its injectable form, which has been used by millions of patients worldwide. In the OASIS 4 trial, serious adverse events were actually less common in the treatment group than in the placebo group (3.9% vs 8.8%), and fewer than 7% of patients stopped treatment due to side effects.

As with any prescription medicine, Wegovy tablets are not suitable for everyone. They should not be taken by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, and are not currently approved for use during pregnancy. Our clinical team will assess your suitability before any prescription is issued.

Clinically tested - approved by the FDA following a phase 3 randomised controlled trial

Side effects are mostly mild - the most common are nausea and vomiting, typically during dose escalation, and settling down over time for most patients

Prescriber-led at Phlo Clinic - our clinicians will review your health history before prescribing and monitor you throughout treatment

What does the Wegovy tablet dosage guide look like?

Wegovy tablets follow a gradual four-step titration schedule, starting at a low dose of 1.5mg daily and increasing at a minimum every four weeks, giving your body time to adjust and helping to minimise digestive side effects like nausea. The full maintenance dose of 25mg once daily is typically reached by week 16 of treatment if you respond well, and is taken long-term to maintain weight loss results.

The tablet is taken once daily on an empty stomach, with a small amount of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medicines. This fasting window is important for the medication to absorb properly.

What to expect

Step 1

Your body begins adjusting to semaglutide. Mild nausea is common during this phase and usually settles quickly.

Step 2

Appetite begins to reduce noticeably for most patients. Continue taking on an empty stomach each morning.

Step 3

Weight loss typically becomes more consistent at this stage. Side effects, if any, are usually milder than in earlier weeks.

Step 4

Full therapeutic dose for ongoing weight management. This is the dose used throughout the OASIS 4 clinical trial, in which patients lost an average of 13.6% of body weight.

The schedule above is based on the FDA-approved US prescribing information. Guidance will be confirmed by the MHRA on approval. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your Phlo Clinic clinician and do not adjust your dose without speaking to a healthcare professional first.

How to take your Wegovy tablet

Daily routine

  1. Take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before eating or drinking anything other than water

  2. Use a small amount of water, no more than around 120ml (4oz); do not take with other drinks

  3. Wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines; this allows the semaglutide to absorb properly

  4. If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next tablet at the usual time the following day; do not take two doses to make up for a missed one

Already on Wegovy injections?

If you're currently taking Wegovy 2.4mg injections and want to switch to the tablet, you may be able to start at the full 25mg maintenance dose, skipping the titration steps entirely.

This would typically begin one week after your last injection, however is subject to a clinical review. One of our prescribers will assess your suitability as part of a switching consultation.

Wegovy tablets side effects

The side effect profile of Wegovy tablets is broadly consistent with the Wegovy injection, most commonly affecting the digestive system, particularly in the early weeks of treatment while your dose is being increased. For the majority of patients, these effects are mild to moderate and improve as the body adjusts.

The following side effects were reported in the OASIS 4 phase 3 clinical trial:

Nausea

The most commonly reported side effect, affecting around 47% of patients taking the tablet

Vomiting

Reported in around 31% of patients, most often when increasing dose

Diarrhoea

A known effect across the GLP-1 class, generally mild and short-lived

Constipation

Reported by some patients, particularly earlier in treatment

Pancreatitis

Rare but serious; seek urgent medical attention if you experience persistent severe abdominal pain

Gallbladder problems

Including gallstones, consistent with other GLP-1 medicines

Thyroid tumours

A precautionary warning on the box; do not take if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. This was not observed in animal studies, but human relevance is unknown

How do side effects compare to Wegovy injections?

The types of side effects are largely the same. Both are semaglutide and act on the same pathways.

The main practical difference is in how side effects are managed: the tablet requires a strict fasting protocol (taken on an empty stomach, with a 30-minute wait before eating & drinking), and nausea rates in the tablet trial were somewhat higher than those reported in injectable Wegovy trials.

However, serious adverse events were less common with the tablet in the OASIS 4 trial than with placebo.

Will I be able to switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy tablets?

If you're currently taking Wegovy injections and would like to switch to the tablet, this will be possible but it will require a clinical review to make sure the switch is appropriate for you and that any dose transition is managed safely.

The tablet is not simply a like-for-like swap: the dosing is different (25mg oral vs 2.4mg injectable), the fasting requirements are new, and your clinician will want to ensure you're stable on your current dose before any change is made.

At Phlo Clinic, the switching process would follow these steps:

  1. Join the waitlist
Register your interest now. We'll notify you the moment Wegovy tablets are available to prescribe and when you can start your consultation to make the switch.

  2. Complete a switching consultation
One of our prescribing pharmacists will review your treatment history, current dose, and health profile to confirm you're a suitable candidate to switch.

  3. Receive your prescription
If approved, your clinician will prescribe Wegovy tablets at the appropriate starting dose for a switch. Please note, this may differ from your current injection dose.

  4. Begin your tablet treatment
We'll guide you through how to take the tablet, how to manage side effects, dose escalation schedule, and provide monthly check-ins as well as support via our patient care team, 7 days a week.
