Starting Wegovy can bring changes to your digestion, including constipation or diarrhoea. These digestive shifts are relatively common during the early weeks of treatment or when increasing your dose. While they can be uncomfortable, there are practical strategies to help ease these symptoms and maintain digestive comfort.

For a full overview of all potential side effects, check out our Wegovy Side Effects Guide.

Constipation on Wegovy

Some people experience constipation when taking Wegovy. This happens because the medication can slow the movement of food through your digestive system, making stools firmer or less frequent.

How to reduce constipation on Wegovy

  1. Stay hydrated - Drinking enough fluids helps soften stools and supports regular bowel movements. Aim to sip water throughout the day. Herbal teas and clear broths can also contribute to hydration.
  2. Include fibre gradually - Fibre from vegetables, fruit, oats, beans, and whole grains supports healthy digestion. Increase your intake slowly to avoid bloating or discomfort. Combining soluble fibre (like oats or lentils) with insoluble fibre (like vegetables or wholegrain bread) can be especially effective.
  3. Gentle movement - Regular light activity, such as walking, stretching, or gentle yoga, stimulates digestion and encourages bowel movements. Even short 10–15-minute walks after meals can make a difference.
  4. Consider supportive remedies if needed - If constipation persists, speak with your healthcare provider or Phlo Clinic about suitable stool softeners or mild laxatives. Using them temporarily can help you stay comfortable while your body adjusts to Wegovy.

Diarrhoea on Wegovy

Some patients notice looser stools or diarrhoea as their digestive system adapts to Wegovy. While usually temporary, it can be unpleasant and disruptive.

How to manage diarrhoea on Wegovy

  1. Maintain hydration - Diarrhoea can lead to fluid and electrolyte loss. Water, herbal teas, clear broths, and drinks containing electrolytes help replenish what is lost and prevent dehydration.
  2. Choose gentle foods - Stick to easily digestible options such as rice, bananas, applesauce, toast, or plain cooked vegetables. Avoid very fatty, spicy, or rich foods until your digestion settles.
  3. Smaller, frequent meals - Eating smaller portions more frequently is gentler on the stomach and may reduce symptoms compared with larger meals.
  4. Observe and record patterns - Keeping a simple diary of foods, timing, and symptoms can help you identify triggers and guide discussions with your GP for ongoing management.
