Wegovy tablets dosage guide: what the dosage schedule is expected to look like

Wegovy is best known in the UK as a once-weekly injection, but a tablet form of the same active ingredient (semaglutide) has now been approved by the MHRA. Novo Nordisk expects it to become available via private prescription within weeks, over summer 2026.

If you’ve been searching for information on Wegovy tablets, you’re ahead of the curve: the tablet isn’t on pharmacy shelves yet, but understanding the dose schedule and how it differs from the injection is useful preparation for when it arrives.

This guide covers what the tablet is, how the dose escalation works, what to do if you miss a tablet, and what UK patients should know right now.

What is the Wegovy tablet and why the dosage is different?

The Wegovy tablet contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, semaglutide. It works in the same way, by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1 that helps regulate appetite and blood glucose. The difference is in how it’s taken and, as a result, how the dose is structured.

Why a tablet changes the dosing rules:

Because semaglutide is absorbed very differently through the gut compared to an injection under the skin, the tablet requires a much higher dose to achieve the same effect. It also has strict instructions around when and how to take it, because food and drink can significantly reduce how much semaglutide the body absorbs.

The injection delivers semaglutide directly into the tissue under the skin, where it’s absorbed steadily over the week. The tablet is absorbed through the stomach lining, and absorption drops sharply if food or drink is present. That’s why the tablet has strict administration rules:

  • Take it once daily, in the morning, on an empty stomach.
  • Use only a small amount of plain water (no more than 120ml).
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medication.

These rules aren’t optional. Skipping them doesn’t just reduce the tablet’s effectiveness — it can mean the dose is almost entirely wasted, so you may not get the weight-loss results you’re aiming for.

Wegovy tablet dosage schedule

Unlike the injection, which is taken once a week, the Wegovy tablet is taken once daily. For patients who are new to weight loss, the dose starts low and increases gradually over several months, following the same tolerability logic as the injection: giving the body time to adjust to help reduce side effects, particularly nausea.

Phase Dose Duration
Starting dose 1.5 mg once daily 30 days (approx. 1 month)
First increase 4 mg once daily 30 days
Second increase 9 mg once daily 30 days
Maintenance dose 25 mg once daily Ongoing

Why the doses look so much higher than the injection

If you’re familiar with the injection, the tablet doses may look surprising: the injection maintenance dose is 2.4mg weekly, while the tablet maintenance dose is 25mg daily.

That’s not a stronger medicine, it’s compensation for absorption. Only a fraction of the semaglutide in each tablet reaches the bloodstream, so the dose is set higher to deliver a comparable therapeutic effect.

The 25mg maintenance tablet is designed to work about as well as the 2.4mg weekly injection, and an indirect comparison of the OASIS 4 and STEP 1 trials found that key outcomes (the proportions of patients reaching 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% weight loss) were broadly comparable between the two forms.

Can the escalation be slowed down?

Yes. If side effects such as nausea, vomiting or digestive discomfort are difficult to manage, one of our prescribers may recommend staying on a lower dose for longer before moving up. This is consistent with how the injection escalation is managed, and it doesn’t mean treatment is failing. In the OASIS 4 trial, gastrointestinal side effects were reported by around 74% of participants, but were typically mild to moderate and temporary; around 6.9% discontinued treatment due to side effects overall.

Note for current Wegovy injection users: the MHRA has confirmed that patients on the weekly 2.4mg injection can move straight to the 25mg daily tablet. Even so, switching isn’t simply a dose swap, so our clinicians will confirm the right approach for you based on your previous treatment.

What to do if you miss a Wegovy tablet

The missed-dose rule for the tablet is simple but stricter than the injection. Because the tablet only works on an empty stomach, you can’t take it later in the day once you’ve eaten or had a drink — it won’t absorb properly.

So if you miss your morning tablet, skip that day’s dose entirely and take your next tablet the following morning as usual. Don’t take two tablets to catch up, and don’t take an extra dose.

If you miss several days in a row, don’t simply restart at your usual dose. Re-exposure after a break can bring on stronger side effects if your body has lost its adjustment to the medicine, so a prescriber may recommend stepping back to a lower dose and building up again. If you’ve missed more than a few days, speak to your prescribing pharmacist before resuming rather than guessing.

Why you can’t take it later in the day

The tablet’s absorption depends entirely on an empty stomach. If you remember a missed dose later in the morning, after breakfast, or at any point after eating or drinking, taking it then won’t work as intended.

The practical rule: take it in the morning only, on an empty stomach, with a small amount of plain water only, and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.

Wegovy tablets in the UK: where things stand

As of June 2026, the Wegovy tablet has been approved by the MHRA, with access via UK-registered healthcare providers expected over summer 2026. It is not yet on the NHS; that decision will follow the usual NICE cost-effectiveness assessment.

UK pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet. To be among the first to hear when the tablet is available, and what it will cost, you can join our waitlist.

In the meantime, if you are after semaglutide treatment, the weekly injection remains available. If you’re ready to start a medically supervised weight-loss treatment now, the Wegovy injection is available through Phlo Clinic with a quick online suitability questionnaire reviewed by our qualified prescribing pharmacists. There’s no GP referral needed, and if you’re suitable, your treatment is delivered to your door with free UK-wide tracked delivery.

Common questions about Wegovy tablet dosage

Is the Wegovy tablet the same strength as the injection?

Not in terms of the numbers on the pack, but the therapeutic effect at the maintenance dose is intended to be comparable. The tablet uses much higher doses because oral semaglutide has lower bioavailability — it passes through the stomach first and not all of it is absorbed, whereas the injection goes directly under the skin into the bloodstream.

Can I switch from the injection to the tablet?

Yes, now that the tablet is approved and once it’s available. The MHRA has said patients on the weekly 2.4mg injection can move straight to the 25mg daily tablet, but switching still isn’t a simple dose swap and may not be the best option for everyone, so it will be managed by our clinicians.

Does the tablet cause the same side effects as the injection?

The side effect profile of the Wegovy tablets is broadly similar to the Wegovy injections with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation the most commonly reported side effects as you move through the doses. Some patients may find the tablet causes more nausea initially, particularly if the empty-stomach instructions aren’t followed correctly.

What if I accidentally eat before taking my tablet?

Skip the dose for that day. Taking the tablet after food significantly reduces absorption, so it’s better to miss one dose than to take it ineffectively. Resume your normal schedule the following morning.
