Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen: what it is and how to use it
Wegovy was licensed for a new higher dose of 7.2mg by the MHRA back in January 2026. As this was a much higher volume of medication, to get the 7.2mg dose, patients had to inject three doses of 2.4mg one after the other and use three pens for a 4-week supply. However, that has now changed as Novo Nordisk has released a new single pen pre-filled with exactly 7.2mg. That means you’ll now get four pens, each containing a single dose of 7.2mg, as your 4-week supply.
This is quite a significant change to how you take the 7.2mg but it should make things considerably simpler.
Whether this dose is already part of your treatment or you’re considering moving up from 2.4mg, here’s everything you need to know about the new pen and how to use it.
Why does a 7.2mg dose exist?
When you start Wegovy, you begin on a low dose that gradually increases over time. This is intentional to give your body time to adjust to the medication and help manage any side effects you may experience.
For most people, the journey looks something like this: starting doses of 0.25mg, stepping up through 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, and eventually reaching what was the standard maintenance dose of 2.4mg. You can see the full schedule in our Wegovy dosage guide.
The 2.4mg dose was the highest available dose until January 2026. For many people, it delivers excellent results. But for some, progress can slow or plateau at this dose, and that’s where the 7.2mg dose comes in.
It’s worth being clear, moving to 7.2mg isn’t automatic or always needed. It’s only prescribed when clinically appropriate, based on how your treatment has gone so far. Every decision about your dose is made on an individual basis, with your health and circumstances at the centre.
If you’ve hit a plateau on the 2.4mg dose and feel like you need more support, it’s worth speaking to your prescribing pharmacist. You can read more about managing a weight loss plateau on Wegovy in our dedicated guide.
What the clinical evidence shows about weight loss at 7.2mg
The 7.2mg dose was studied in the STEP UP clinical trial, which followed more than 1,400 participants over 72 weeks. The results were significant:
- Average weight loss of approximately 20.7% of body weight
- More than one-third of participants lost 25% or more of their starting weight
- Weight loss continued throughout the full 72-week period, with no early plateau
These are meaningful numbers. For context, the standard 2.4mg dose is associated with around 15% average weight loss in clinical trials. The higher dose offers additional benefit for those who need it, giving them a weight loss boost while maintaining the established semaglutide (Wegovy) safety profile.
What’s new about the 7.2mg pen?
This is the big change. Each Wegovy 7.2mg dose is now supplied in a dedicated single-dose pre-filled pen, and it’s a much simpler experience than before.
Previously, Wegovy was supplied in a FlexTouch pen. The new device is called the Wegovy HD®, and it’s a single-dose pre-filled pen designed specifically for the 7.2mg dose.

Reaching a weekly 7.2mg dose previously meant taking three separate 2.4mg injections on the same day, each week. That meant three needles, three pens to track, and a lot more to manage. The new single-dose pen replaces all of that with one injection, once a week. Think of it as one pen = one dose.
Here’s what a 4-week supply looks like now:
The medication itself hasn’t changed. You’re still taking semaglutide, the same active ingredient as always. Only the device has changed, and it’s changed for the better to make it easier to administer.
How to use the Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen
The pen is designed to be a lot more straightforward. Most people find it quick and easy after their first use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to injecting your weekly dose safely for the new Wegovy 7.2mg single-dose pen:
Before you inject
- Check the pen label. Make sure it says Wegovy 7.2mg and that it’s within its use-by date.
- Look through the viewing window. The solution should be clear and colourless. Don’t use the pen if it looks cloudy, discoloured, or contains particles.
- Store it correctly. Keep unused pens in the fridge (2 to 8°C) in their original carton. If you need to take a pen out of the fridge, it can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days.
Choosing your injection site
You can inject into your abdomen, the front of your thigh, or your upper arm. Use the same general area each week if you prefer but try to choose a slightly different spot each time to reduce any irritation.
Step-by-step injection guide
- Remove the pen cap. There’s no needle to attach. It’s built into the device and stays hidden before, during, and after the injection.
- Press the pen flat against your skin. Apply firm pressure. This is what starts the injection. You should see the yellow bar begin to move and may hear a click. Don’t remove the pen from your skin before the yellow bar has fully stopped moving.
- Hold the pen in place until the yellow bar stops moving and you hear a second click. This takes around 5 to 10 seconds and confirms the full dose has been delivered.
- Remove the pen from your skin. The needle cover locks automatically after the injection.
- Dispose of the pen safely. Each pen is single-use. Do not try to reuse it. The full dose should be administered.
Reminder: Don’t remove the pen from your skin before the yellow bar has fully stopped moving. Doing so may mean you don’t receive your complete dose.
The full instructions for use are also included in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your pen.
What if I miss a dose?
Missing the occasional dose won’t derail your progress. Here’s what to do:
- If fewer than five days have passed since your missed injection day, take the dose as soon as you remember and then continue with your next dose on your usual day.
- If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule the following week.
Don’t take two doses at the same time or close together to make up for a missed one. If you’re unsure, our team is happy to help.
Wegovy side effects to be aware of
The side effect profile of the 7.2mg dose is the same as with lower doses of Wegovy. Most people who’ve tolerated semaglutide well at 2.4mg find the higher dose manageable, particularly when the dose increase is gradual.
The most commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort. These tend to be mild to moderate and most common during dose escalation.
One thing to be aware of: a higher incidence of dysaesthesia (a tingling or skin sensitivity sensation) was observed in the STEP UP trial at the 7.2mg dose. Most cases were mild, and the majority resolved without stopping treatment.
Our Wegovy side effects guide has practical tips for managing the most common symptoms. If you have any concerns about how you’re feeling on your treatment, speak to your prescribing pharmacist.
