How Do You Take Wegovy Tablets: A Complete Guide
The Wegovy tablet is the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection (semaglutide) but in a daily oral form. For many patients, especially those who have avoided weight loss medication because of anxiety over self-injecting, the tablet offers a genuinely great, new option.
But there is one important difference between the tablet and the injection that every patient needs to understand before they start: the tablet only works if you take it in a very specific way. This isn't about being overly cautious, the Wegovy tablet will only work best for you if it’s taken correctly. Get it wrong, and you could be absorbing only a small fraction of the dose you think you’re getting.
This guide covers exactly how to take the Wegovy tablet, why each step matters, and what to do if something goes wrong.
What Wegovy Tablets Are and How They Differ From the Injection
Wegovy tablets are now available in the UK via private prescription, following MHRA approval on 11 June 2026. As with all prescription weight loss treatments, a clinical assessment is required before treatment can begin. Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide in a tablet form. It’s the same ingredient used in the Wegovy injection, just delivered orally rather than subcutaneously. The injection goes directly under the skin, where it's absorbed steadily into the bloodstream with around 89% bioavailability.
The tablet has to survive the digestive process first and the stomach would normally break semaglutide down before it ever reached the bloodstream, which is why it's only been available as an injection until now.
To solve this, the Wegovy tablet uses a special absorption helper technology called salcaprozate sodium (SNAC) which temporarily alters the stomach's acidity at the point of contact with the tablet. This temporary change in acidity offers a narrow window in which semaglutide can pass through the stomach lining and be absorbed. Once in the bloodstream, it behaves identically to the injectable form and stomach acid levels return to normal.
This mechanism is why the administration rules are so important and non-negotiable. In order for the SNAC technology of the tablet to create that absorption window depends entirely on the stomach environment at the exact moment you take the tablet. Anything that disrupts that environment such as food, drink, other medications, closes the window and significantly reduces how much semaglutide actually reaches your system.
Why the Stomach Environment Is Critical for Wegovy Tablets
The absorption window created by SNAC is narrow and sensitive. Any food in the stomach changes the stomach acidity, stimulates digestive enzyme activity, and physically coats the stomach lining — all of which interfere with SNAC's mechanism. Even a small amount of food or drink other than plain water is enough to disrupt absorption meaningfully, which is why it’s so important not to eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy tablet.
If you take the Wegovy tablet with more water than the recommended amount (120ml, half a glass) it will dilute the stomach environment and reduce SNAC's effectiveness. Another thing worth bearing in mind is other medications can also alter the stomach's pH or compete for the same absorption pathway — another reason the 30-minute wait applies to all oral medications, not just food and drink.
The practical consequence of failing to take the Wegovy tablet correctly is significant. Studies on oral semaglutide formulations show that taking the tablet with food can reduce bioavailability by up to 40% compared with the fasted, correct technique. That's a huge difference which could really impact the treatment working effectively for you and it not working at the dose you're taking.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Taking Wegovy Tablets Correctly
Step 1 – Timing Your Dose in the Morning
The best time to take your Wegovy tablet is as soon as you wake up.
Always take your Wegovy tablet first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything. The moment you wake up is the ideal window as your stomach is empty, stomach acid levels are at their baseline, and the stomach lining is uncoated by food.
Do not delay taking the tablet once you are awake. Even a glass of water, a cup of tea, or a small snack before taking it will alter the stomach environment enough to reduce absorption.
Taking the tablet at the same time each morning also supports a stable weekly concentration of semaglutide in your system. Consistency in timing matters more than most patients realise. Having a consistent morning routine is the single best way to ensure you never accidentally miss a dose and maximises your treatment effectiveness.
Step 2 – Using the Right Amount of Water
Swallow the Wegovy tablet with no more than 120ml of plain water which is roughly half a standard glass. This is the maximum amount that allows SNAC to function effectively.
Using more than 120ml dilutes the stomach environment and reduces SNAC's effectiveness. The type of water matters too. Plain, still water is the only acceptable liquid. No tea, coffee, juice, sparkling water, flavoured water, or any other drink. Even a seemingly harmless drink like black coffee or juice changes stomach acidity enough to interfere with the process.
Tip: If you are unsure what 120ml looks like, measure it once and use that glass consistently. It becomes second nature quickly.
Step 3 – Swallowing the Tablet Whole
The tablet must be swallowed whole. Do not crush it, chew it, split it, dissolve it, suck or hold it in your mouth before swallowing.
The tablet's physical structure is part of how it works. Altering it in any way destroys the controlled-release mechanism that allows SNAC and semaglutide to interact correctly in the stomach.
Place the tablet on your tongue, take a small sip of your measured water, and swallow immediately.
Step 4 – Waiting Before Eating, Drinking, or Taking Other Medications
After taking the tablet, you must wait at least 30 minutes before eating any food, drinking anything other than plain water, or taking any other oral medication.
This 30-minute window is the absorption phase. The SNAC technology creates the conditions for semaglutide to cross the stomach lining, and that process needs to be completely undisturbed. Food or drink during this window changes the stomach environment mid-absorption and cuts the process short. Waiting the full 30 minutes is a non-negotiable part of the dosing procedure and skipping it reduces how much semaglutide your body actually absorbs.
Taking any other medication deserves specific attention. Many patients are accustomed to taking multiple medications together in the morning — blood pressure tablets, thyroid medication, contraceptive pills, vitamins. All of these need to wait until after the 30-minute window. Taking other oral medications alongside or shortly after the Wegovy tablet can affect both semaglutide's absorption and the absorption of those other medications.
If you take medication that requires strict timing, for example, levothyroxine for thyroid conditions which has its own fasting requirements, speak to your prescribing pharmacist about how to sequence your morning medications correctly. The two schedules can usually be managed together, but it needs planning.
Step 5 – Following Your Prescribed Dosage Schedule
Wegovy tablets follow a structured escalating dose schedule, starting at a lower dose and increasing gradually over several months. The UK MHRA-approved schedule is 1.5mg daily for the first month, increasing to 4mg, then 9mg, and finally the 25mg maintenance dose, spending at least 30 days at each level.
This escalation exists for the same reason as the injection's titration schedule: it gives your body time to adjust to semaglutide and significantly reduces the severity of gastrointestinal side effects during the early weeks of treatment.
Only take the dose you have been prescribed. Do not increase your dose ahead of schedule and only take one tablet per day. Do not take two tablets on the same day to compensate for a missed dose.
What to Do If You Get It Wrong
If You Took the Tablet With Food or the Wrong Liquid
If you accidentally took your tablet after eating, or with a drink other than plain water, the dose is likely to have been only partially absorbed or not absorbed at all.
Do not take another tablet to compensate. Simply make a note of what happened and resume your normal scheduled dose the following morning. One missed or poorly absorbed dose will not derail your treatment, but consistently making this mistake will affect your results over time. If you are regularly struggling with the fasting routine, speak to your prescribing pharmacist rather than persisting with poor technique.
If You Took Too Much Water With the Tablet
Taking the tablet with more than 120ml of water is one of the most common administration errors, particularly in the first few weeks when the routine is still being established.
If this happens, do not panic or take another dose. Continue with your normal schedule the following morning. Going forward, measure 120ml before taking your tablet to avoid repeating the error and get used to the amount of water until it feels instinctive. A small, measured glass left on the bathroom or kitchen counter the night before can help build the habit.
As a Phlo Clinic patient, you can always speak to our clinical team if you are unsure whether your absorption has been consistently affected.
If You Forgot to Take Your Tablet That Morning
If you miss your morning dose and remember later in the day, skip that dose entirely and resume the following morning as normal. The tablet won't absorb properly once you've eaten or had a drink.
Never take the Wegovy tablet in the afternoon or evening as the tablet's timing requirements are specifically tied to a fasted morning stomach. Taking it later in the day, even if you haven't eaten for several hours, does not replicate the fasted morning condition reliably enough to guarantee absorption.
Do not take two tablets the following morning to make up for a missed dose.
If you frequently forget your morning tablet, consider setting a daily alarm as part of your routine. Some patients find it helpful to keep the tablets next to something they always use first thing e.g. a bedside glass, a toothbrush, or a phone charger.
If You Are Unsure Whether You Took the Tablet Correctly
If you are regularly uncertain about whether your administration technique is correct, contact your prescribing pharmacist. Technique issues are one of the most common reasons patients report that the tablet feels less effective than expected and they are almost always fixable with a brief review of the routine. Keeping a simple daily log of when and how you took your tablet can help identify patterns of incorrect use.
Your patient information leaflet also contains a step-by-step guide to administration. Reading it carefully at the start of treatment is worth doing even if you feel confident you understand the instructions.
The pros and cons of the Wegovy tablet vs the injection
Understanding the difference in taking the Wegovy tablet and the injection is key to helping decide what works best for you.
The tablet means no self-injecting, no needles or sharps bin disposal and no refrigeration. For anyone who hasn’t started on GLP-1 weight loss medication because of an aversion to needles or injecting, or who travel frequently and find cold storage difficult, the tablet could give you a practical advantage.
The injection, by contrast, is taken once a week with no dietary restrictions around timing, no fasting window or 30-minute wait, and no risk of other medications being affected. Its absorption is predictable as it goes directly into the bloodstream. For many patients, this works best for them. For anyone with early mornings, shift work, complex medication schedules, or inconsistent routines, the once-weekly injection offers a predictability that makes it an easy choice.
However, neither form is better than the other, it’s what works for you and your lifestyle. The right choice depends on your existing habits, routine and what you can sustain consistently over the months of treatment that produce the best weight loss results. Your prescribing pharmacist at Phlo Clinic can help you think through which is the better fit for you depending on your circumstances and previous use of GLP-1 medication.
