How to take Wegovy Tablets

For detailed instructions on how to take your tablets, dose escalation, storage and disposal, please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet found with your medication. You can access an online version here. You must carefully follow all instructions below to ensure the medication is effective

  • Same time each morning - Take one tablet once daily, first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.

  • Swallow whole with a little water - Take it with no more than 120 ml (about 4 fl oz) of plain water. Don't crush, chew, or split the tablet.

  • Wait 30 minutes - Hold off for at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking , or taking any other oral medication.

Storage

Please store your Wegovy Tablets in their original packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Keep them at room temperature and do not refrigerate or freeze them.

Do not add the medication to blister / pill box as it shouldn't be taken at the same time as other medicines.

Side effects

As with all medications, side effects can occur when taking Wegovy Tablets. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Rest assured that these tend to settle as your body adapts to the medication.

If you experience prolonged stomach pain, a sustained increased heart rate, or any symptoms that are alarming to you, please stop using your treatment and get in touch.

Gallstones are a fairly common condition within the UK population, affecting roughly 1 in 10 people. Approximately 1 in 10 users of Wegovy, and up to 1 in 100 Mounjaro users, develop gallstones. Additionally, up to 1 in 100 experience inflammation of the gallbladder. These occurrences are often linked to rapid weight loss, typically around 1.5kg (over 3 pounds) per week. Cholecystitis, or gallbladder inflammation, appears to be more prevalent among Mounjaro and Wegovy users.

Individuals with gallstones can still consider using Mounjaro or Wegovy, but we will evaluate various factors during your consultation to determine the suitability of weight loss medication for you.

If you experience abdominal discomfort, particularly on the right side beneath your ribs, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

In cases of severe pain, vomiting, blood in urine, or a high temperature, please contact NHS 111 for guidance or proceed to A&E. We advise maintaining a diet of small, frequent meals throughout the day to avoid rapid weight loss and encourage adequate hydration.

Important information - contraception interactions

Women of child-bearing age are recommended to use contraception during treatment with Wegovy Tablets.

With Wegovy Tablets - as a precaution - it is advised switching to a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method of contraception upon beginning your treatment (for 4 weeks), or after each increase in dose (for 4 weeks).

Disposal

Do not throw away your tablets via wastewater and household waste. You can dispose unwanted medicine at your local pharmacy. These measures will help protect the environment.
