Orforglipron, which will be sold under the brand name Foundayo, is a once-daily tablet being developed for weight management in adults. It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by mimicking a natural gut hormone that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. This is the same broad approach used by injectable weight-loss medicines such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), though Mounjaro works on two receptors, GIP and GLP-1, whereas orforglipron acts on GLP-1 alone.
What makes orforglipron notable is its format. Most GLP-1 medicines are injections. Orforglipron is a small-molecule tablet taken once a day, with no injections and none of the strict food and water timing rules that apply to the oral-semaglutide (Wegovy tablet). It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.
As with other medicines in this class, it is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and it carries recognised risks and side effects that a prescriber would discuss with you.
Important: orforglipron is not yet available in the UK. It is currently under approval by the MHRA and cannot be legally prescribed or dispensed here until that regulatory process concludes. This article explains what it is and how it works, based on the evidence published so far.
What is orforglipron?
Orforglipron is a prescription-only medicine intended for adults living with obesity, or those who are overweight and have a weight-related health condition. Like other GLP-1 treatments, it is designed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.
Foundayo is the brand name; orforglipron is the active ingredient. You may see both used interchangeably, in the same way that Wegovy and semaglutide refer to the same medicine.
Why it can be taken as a tablet?
Most GLP-1 medicines are peptide-based, meaning they are built from chains of amino acids. Peptides are digested and poorly absorbed by stomach acid, which is why they are usually given by injection. Orforglipron is a small-molecule medicine rather than a peptide, so it survives digestion and can be absorbed reliably from a tablet.
How does orforglipron work?
Orforglipron works by mimicking a natural gut hormone called GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1. Your body releases this hormone after eating, and it plays a central role in telling your brain that you have had enough.
By activating GLP-1 receptors, orforglipron:
- helps you feel fuller sooner, and stay full for longer
- reduces appetite and food cravings
- slows the rate at which the stomach empties, so you naturally eat less
The result is that eating less feels more manageable, because the underlying hunger signals are reduced rather than simply resisted. It is a treatment aid that supports lifestyle change, not a replacement for it.
How orforglipron differs from other GLP-1 treatments
There are now several GLP-1 medicines available or in development, and they are not interchangeable. Here are the factual differences.
Compared with the Wegovy tablet
Both are oral GLP-1 tablets, but they work differently in the body and are taken differently.
The Wegovy tablet contains semaglutide, a peptide that relies on an absorption enhancer to cross the stomach lining, which is why it requires strict administration rules. It must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than a small sip of plain water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines.
Orforglipron does not require those rules. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Their dose schedules also differ.
Compared with Mounjaro
Orforglipron is sometimes referred to as "the Mounjaro pill", but they are different medicines, even though both come from the same manufacturer.
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which activates two hormone receptors, GLP-1 and GIP. Orforglipron activates GLP-1 only. Mounjaro is a weekly injection; orforglipron is a daily tablet.
Choosing between them is a clinical decision. These are factual differences in how each medicine is built and taken, not a ranking. Which treatment is appropriate depends on your medical history, your goals, and what fits your routine, and that is a conversation to have with a prescriber.
Who might orforglipron suit?
Once licensed, orforglipron would be intended for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition, including but not limited to, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Beyond the formal criteria, the group most likely to be interested is people who would prefer to avoid injections. For patients who have delayed starting GLP-1 treatment because of needle anxiety, or who find the Wegovy tablet's fasting window difficult to fit around their morning, a daily tablet with no timing restrictions is a meaningfully different proposition.
When will orforglipron be available in the UK?
Orforglipron is not currently licensed for use in the UK.
It received FDA approval in the United States on 1 April 2026, and Eli Lilly has confirmed it has submitted the medicine for regulatory review in more than 40 countries, including the UK, where it sits with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
There is no confirmed UK launch date. Based on typical MHRA review timelines, a realistic estimate is late 2026 for private availability through digital pharmacies such as Phlo Clinic, though this could move earlier or later depending on how the review progresses.
How UK approval works
Getting a new medicine to UK patients involves two separate steps.
MHRA licensing. The MHRA independently assesses the clinical trial evidence to decide whether a medicine is safe, effective, and can be legally prescribed in the UK. This is a separate process from FDA approval, as US clearance does not automatically apply here.
NICE appraisal. Even after MHRA approval, a medicine is not automatically available on the NHS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence reviews how well it works and whether it represents good value before recommending routine NHS funding.
In practice, this usually means a private prescription route becomes available first, with NHS access following later.
Staying informed
If orforglipron is something you are watching, the most useful thing to know is that nothing can be legally supplied in the UK until the MHRA review concludes. Any seller offering it before then is not supplying it legitimately.
