Understanding the science behind your Mounjaro weight loss medication

It’s important to understand what Mounjaro is and to take it as directed. Make sure you read our treatment summary and see our step-by-step-guide. We've also prepared some Mounjaro FAQs to supplement the Patient Information Leaflet and Mounjaro user guide that comes with your supply.

Why consider Mounjaro for weight loss?

Mounjaro for weight loss is suitable for individuals who are medically classed as overweight or obese and have a BMI in the range of 27-30 upwards (additional eligibility criteria applies). It’s not intended as a quick fix, but is designed to improve overall health and reduce the health-related risks associated with being overweight or obese.

Before starting your Mounjaro consultation, please ensure you meet the following checklist criteria:

You are aged between 18 and 75

You have a BMI above 30 or have a BMI above 27 and a weight-related accompanying condition

(e.g. high blood pressure or cholesterol amongst others)

You do not have diabetes

(or pre-diabetes requiring treatment)

Meet all other clinical criteria subject to your medical history.

During the consultation stage we’ll ask you for more specific information to ensure Mounjaro is the right option for you.

How does Mounjaro work?

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is called tirzepatide and it stimulates two different naturally occurring hormonal receptors: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Other weight loss injections like Ozempic and Wegovy work on GLP-1 alone, whereas Mounjaro combines with GIP to increase the weight loss potential.

GLP-1 helps to regulate blood sugar levels, which in turn talks to the brain to make you feel less hungry and prevent cravings. It also slows down the emptying of the stomach to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

GIP regulates energy balance in brain and fat cells, enhancing the GLP-1 effect of suppressing your appetite and improving sugar control.

How do you take Mounjaro?

You’ll take Mounjaro using the easy-to-use Mounjaro KiwkPen. You’ll use the KwikPen once a week, on the same day, under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach, thigh or upper arm. It’s important to change injection sites regularly. You can inject in the same area but choose a different spot in that area each time.

The KwikPen comes pre-filled with 4 doses, lasting 4 weeks. When you first start taking Mounjaro, the starting dose is 2.5mg once weekly for 4 weeks, increasing to 5mg once weekly for the following 4 weeks. Dosage can then increase every month as your treatment continues, with a maximum weekly dosage of 15mg. It’s important to note that not everyone will need the higher doses for Mounjaro to be effective.
