Mounjaro (active ingredient tirzepatide) is an injectable medication that aids in weight loss by regulating blood sugar and energy balance levels.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) works by stimulating receptors for two hormones: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

For people new to Mounjaro, treatment starts at a lower dose to help the body adjust. If you’ve previously used another weight loss medication, such as Wegovy, your starting dose may be different.
Mounjaro is injected into the skin (subcutaneously) by the user. Each Mounjaro KwikPen contains 4 full doses. Each dose should be taken on the same day every week, but can be taken at any time of day. We recommend planning a 15-minute window at a convenient time in your weekly routine and setting an alarm to remind yourself to take your dose.
If you want to change the day on which you administer your dose - for example, switching from Monday every week to Wednesday every week - make sure you leave at least 72 hours (3 days) between doses.

Mounjaro is designed as a long-term treatment and can be prescribed for the maintenance of weight loss. This allows you to keep using Mounjaro after achieving your target weight, and we will prescribe it if it continues to be appropriate for you to support the maintenance of your new weight.
You should expect to see significant weight loss results from around 6 months with continuous use, and maximum weight loss generally around the 12-18 month mark (depending on medication used, dosage levels and other lifestyle adjustments).
Studies have shown that by week 72 people can achieve a 15% weight loss with 5mg, 19.5% weight loss with 10mg and 20.9% weight loss with 15mg.
Studies have shown combining weight loss medications with diet and exercise can have a greater reduction in bodyweight, when monitored over the same time period.

Wegovy is a higher-dose version of semaglutide (the same active ingredient as Ozempic) that is licensed for weight loss. It is effective, but Mounjaro's dual-action mechanism has demonstrated greater average weight loss in head-to-head clinical studies. Both are once-weekly injections, but Mounjaro's tirzepatide formulation has shown superior results for most patients in trials.
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist which is only licensed for type 2 diabetes in the UK. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works differently - it activates both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which means it targets two separate appetite-regulating pathways simultaneously. Mounjaro is also specifically licensed for weight management in the UK whereas Ozempic is not, making it the more appropriate choice for non-diabetic patients.
The Mounjaro weight loss pen is suitable for individuals based in the UK who are medically classed as overweight or obese and have a BMI in the range of 27-30 upwards (additional eligibility criteria applies). It’s not intended as a quick fix, but is designed to improve overall health and reduce the health-related risks associated with being overweight or obese.

These effects are usually temporary and tend to improve as your body becomes accustomed to the medication. To help manage side effects, drink plenty of water, eat small, bland meals if you feel nauseous, and avoid high fat or spicy foods when feeling unwell. Take your injection at a time of day that fits your routine to minimise disruption.
