Wegovy (Semaglutide), available as a weekly injection or a once-daily tablet, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps reduce appetite and regulate blood glucose. Many people notice fewer cravings when starting treatment, so when hunger returns or persists, it can feel surprising.
Here’s the truth: some hunger is normal, even on Wegovy. The medication is designed to help manage appetite and reduce “food noise”, the excessive thinking about what, when, or how much to eat, and cravings for foods that may not support weight loss. Feeling hungry doesn’t mean something is wrong; it simply means your body is asking for fuel.
There is a difference between normal hunger between meals and excessive, unmanageable hunger, which we’ll go through below.
Does Wegovy suppress appetite?
Yes. Wegovy, whether the injection or the tablet, works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which slows stomach emptying, increases feelings of fullness, and reduces hunger signals from the brain.
However, appetite suppression on Wegovy is a gradual, dose-dependent effect that builds as you move through the titration schedule, and it works alongside your eating habits rather than replacing them. If you're not seeing the effect you expected, the most common reasons are covered below, including being early in your dose titration, your body still adjusting after a recent dose increase, or eating patterns that are working against the medication rather than with it.
Does Wegovy stop food noise?
Wegovy is one of the more effective tools available for reducing food noise. Most people notice a real reduction in food noise once they're on an effective dose for them.
However, food noise reduction tends to lag slightly behind appetite suppression. It's also more noticeable at higher doses, so if you're early in your titration, particularly in the first few weeks on the Wegovy tablet 1.5mg starting dose, or the injection's 0.25mg dose, some residual food noise is expected and shouldn’t be seen as a sign the treatment isn't working.
Why Severe Undereating Can Trigger Strong Hunger
Wegovy is a tool to help manage your appetite, reduce cravings, and make it easier to eat in a balanced way while in a modest calorie deficit to support steady weight loss.
However, if you severely under-eat while on the medication, your body may respond with very strong hunger signals after a few weeks.
This does not mean Wegovy isn’t working. The medication is still reducing appetite and helping you manage cravings, but your body naturally reacts to significant calorie restriction by increasing hunger to protect against perceived starvation.
Key point: Wegovy is designed to help moderate and manage appetite, not completely override your body’s signals for energy. Eating balanced meals and meeting your nutritional needs allows the medication to support healthy appetite control without triggering extreme hunger.
Other Reasons You Might Still Feel Hungry
If you are eating balanced meals and still experiencing hunger, several factors may be at play:
- Your Dose Might Need Tweaking - If you’re early in treatment or on a lower dose, appetite suppression may not be fully effective yet. Both the injection and the tablet are increased gradually over several dose steps, and it can take time to find what works best for your body. On the Wegovy tablet specifically, the starting dose is lower relative to the maintenance dose than on the injection, so some people notice appetite effects build more gradually in the first month or two.
- Your Body is Adjusting - After a dose increase, it may take days or weeks for your body to adapt. Some hunger or cravings are normal while your body adjusts.
- Emotional or Habitual Hunger - Not all hunger is physical. Stress, boredom, or routine eating can trigger cravings that medication doesn’t change. Practicing mindful eating can help you distinguish between physical hunger and habitual or emotional urges.
- Your Eating Patterns May Need Support - Even if your appetite is reduced, your body still needs fuel, especially protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. Skipping meals or eating mostly ultra-processed foods can increase hunger and affect blood glucose stability.
How to Support Wegovy’s Effectiveness
1. Eat a Balanced, Nutrient-Dense Diet
Protein, fibre-rich carbohydrates, and healthy fats help you feel fuller for longer, supporting Wegovy’s appetite-reducing effects and helping you manage food noise.
Recommended foods:
- Protein: Fish, lean meat, eggs, tofu, yoghurt, cheese, milk (or soya alternatives)
- Healthy fats: Nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, fatty fish
- Complex carbohydrates: Whole grains, legumes, potatoes, oats
- Fruits & vegetables: Variety, colour, and fibre
Hydration: Aim for 2–3 litres of water or unsweetened fluids daily. Adequate hydration supports digestion and helps moderate hunger signals.
Tip: Keep healthy snacks handy for moments of unexpected hunger.
2. Eat Mindfully
Eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and pay attention to hunger and fullness cues. Minimising distractions during meals helps you feel more satisfied and reduces excessive thinking about food.
Foods to Limit While on Wegovy
- Ultra-processed foods – low in nutrients, may increase cravings
- Added sugars – spike blood glucose and provide little satiety
- Refined carbohydrates – less filling than whole grains
- Alcohol – high in calories and can affect appetite regulation
- Saturated fats – excessive intake can increase the risk of heart disease
Tip: Sip water throughout the day or use sugar free squash as an easy way to increase fluid intake.
Is there a difference between how the Wegovy tablet and injection affects hunger?
Both formats of Wegovy contain semaglutide and work the same way in the body, so the underlying appetite effect is the same. The main practical difference is the dose titration schedule: the injection moves through 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg and 7.2mg, while the pill moves through 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg, with at least a month at each step.
Whichever form of Wegovy you're on, hunger that's most noticeable at the start of a new dose step, then eases over the following weeks, is the expected pattern and shouldn’t be seen as a sign something's wrong.
Key takeaway
Feeling hungry on Wegovy does not mean it isn’t working. The goal of the medication is to help you feel more in control, reduce excessive cravings, and better regulate your eating patterns.
By using the right dose, eating balanced meals, staying hydrated, and practicing mindful eating, Wegovy can be a powerful tool to support your health and weight management journey.
