Starting Wegovy as part of your weight management plan can feel like a big step forward, and for many people, the results are very encouraging. But if you’ve noticed extra strands coming out when you brush your hair or wash it, you might be wondering whether the two are linked.
Let’s look at what might be happening, why it occurs, and how you can look after your hair while on treatment.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy (Semaglutide) is a weekly injection from the GLP-1 receptor agonist family. It was first developed for people with type 2 diabetes (as Ozempic) but has since been licenced for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or those overweight with weight-related health conditions.
The medication works by mimicking a natural gut hormone (GLP-1), helping to regulate appetite and blood glucose levels. This makes it easier to eat less and lose weight. While the benefits can be significant, some people do notice changes they weren’t expecting — including hair shedding.
Does Wegovy cause hair loss?
There’s no evidence that Wegovy directly causes hair loss. However, some people taking it have reported noticing increased hair shedding after several months.
This doesn’t mean Wegovy itself is harming your hair follicles. More often, hair loss is linked to the changes your body is going through during the weight loss process.
Why Might Hair Loss Happen During Weight Loss?
Several factors may contribute:
- Rapid weight loss - Losing weight quickly can trigger telogen effluvium, a temporary condition where more hairs than usual move into the shedding phase.
- Reduced nutrient intake - A smaller appetite means fewer calories overall, which can sometimes result in missing out on key nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, and certain B vitamins, all important for hair growth.
- Body stress and hormonal shifts - Any major change, from illness to dietary restriction, can place stress on the body, potentially disrupting the normal hair growth cycle.
Is It hair loss unique to Wegovy?
No. Hair shedding is also reported by people using other GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro, and by individuals who lose a lot of weight following bariatric surgery. The pattern suggests that it’s usually the weight loss itself, rather than the specific medication, that triggers hair thinning.
How to support hair health while on Wegovy
Although you may not be able to stop hair loss entirely, there are steps you can take to keep it to a minimum:
- Aim for steady, sustainable weight loss - around 0.5-1 kg (1-2 lbs) per week is generally considered a healthy rate.
- Make nutrition a priority - focus on protein, iron-rich foods, healthy fats, wholegrains, and a variety of fruit and vegetables. Use the Phlo T Plate model (see below) to help guide balanced meals.

- Manage stress where possible - sleep, gentle exercise, and relaxation techniques can all make a difference when it comes to hair loss.
- Treat your hair gently - avoid tight hairstyles, harsh dyes, and excessive heat styling while your hair feels more fragile.
When to see your GP about hair loss on Wegovy (or reach out for support)
Some hair shedding after significant weight loss is common and often temporary. However, if you notice persistent or severe hair loss lasting longer than six months, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms such as tiredness or mood changes, it’s worth speaking to your GP. They may check for other causes, such as thyroid conditions, anaemia, or hormonal imbalances.
You can also contact Phlo Clinic if you’d like advice, reassurance, or support in managing side effects while on Wegovy. Our clinicians are here to help you through your treatment journey.
The bottom line
Wegovy doesn’t appear to directly cause hair loss, but the physical changes that come with losing weight (particularly rapid weight loss) can sometimes trigger temporary shedding.
The good news is that hair usually grows back once your body has adjusted. In the meantime, focus on balanced nutrition, gradual progress, and healthy hair care habits. And if you’re concerned, reach out to your GP or contact Phlo Clinic for personalised support.
