How to take Mounjaro safely

Whether you’re planning on travelling, accidentally missed a dose or feeling unsure of how Mounjaro could interact with your family planning, here’s a handy list of dos and don’ts so you stay safe and healthy throughout your Mounjaro Kwikpen journey.

Can you take two shots of Mounjaro at the same time?

‍

Don’t take two shots of Mounjaro at the same time to make up for a missed dose or to double your dose. The safety and efficacy of doing this hasn’t yet been studied and isn’t recommended by the manufacturer. You must leave at least three days between doses.

Is it okay to take Mounjaro on an empty stomach?

‍

Mounjaro is taken subcutaneously, which means it’s injected under the skin into the fat and is then absorbed into the bloodstream. As it doesn’t enter the bloodstream through the stomach, you can take Mounjaro with, or without food.

Can you drink alcohol on Mounjaro?

‍

Although it’s not known to interact directly with the active drug in Mounjaro (tirzepatide), drinking alcohol isn’t recommended. This is because consuming alcohol while taking Mounjaro may lead to increased calorie consumption and make you more likely to experience gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and vomiting. This increases the risk of dehydration, particularly during dose increase.

If you do consume alcohol, this can lead to dehydration, so it’s important to stay hydrated when taking Mounjaro. Many people aim to drink 2-3 litres of fluid per day from water, unsweetened tea and coffee, sugar-free squash, low fat milk or unsweetened soya milk. However, if you’ve been advised to restrict fluids, follow your clinician’s individual recommendations.

Can you smoke while on Mounjaro?

Similarly to alcohol, tobacco smoke and nicotine do not directly interact with tirzepatide. However, stopping smoking is one of the most impactful changes you can make for long-term health.

Can you use Mounjaro if it’s not been refrigerated?

‍

We recommend keeping your Mounjaro KwikPen in the fridge. If you forget, don’t worry! After first use, Mounjaro may be stored out of the refrigerator at a temperature below 30°C for up to 30 days. Can you take Mounjaro when pregnant?

‍

No, do not take Mounjaro if you’re pregnant. There isn’t enough research to suggest that the active drug in Mounjaro is safe to be used during pregnancy, as pregnant people haven’t been included in clinical trials. Furthermore, animal research suggests that Mounjaro could be harmful to a foetus. Phlo Clinic will not prescribe Mounjaro to you if you are pregnant.

If you’re planning a pregnancy, Mounjaro should be stopped at least one month beforehand, as the medicine stays in the body for several weeks after the last dose.

Can you take Mounjaro while breastfeeding?

‍

Do not take Mounjaro while breastfeeding. It’s not known if the drug is safe to use during this time, as the effects of Mounjaro on breast milk haven’t been researched. Phlo Clinic won’t prescribe Mounjaro to you if you are breastfeeding your child.

Can you bring Mounjaro on a plane?

‍

Yes, you can take Mounjaro on a plane. However, there are a few steps you must take to make sure it arrives safely:

Firstly, keep it with you in a carry-on in a cool bag designed for medicine. The luggage hold may be too hot or too cold, affecting the drug's efficacy.

Secondly, keep it in its original packaging. This protects the medication from light and helps airport security to screen it.
