It’s common to be sensitive to light, and some patients may also feel very hot or very cold and struggle to concentrate as normal.
A migraine is a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, intense headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, and sound. It can significantly impact daily life and may last for hours to days.
Symptoms include severe headache pain, often pulsating or throbbing, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual disturbances known as auras.
Migraines are thought to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Triggers may include hormonal changes, certain foods, stress, lack of sleep, and sensory stimuli.
Do: Identify and avoid triggers, maintain a regular sleep schedule, stay hydrated, and manage stress.
Don't: Skip meals, overuse pain medications (which can lead to rebound headaches), or ignore early warning signs.
Prevention strategies may include lifestyle changes, stress management, identifying and avoiding triggers, regular sleep, and sometimes prescription medications specifically designed for migraine prevention.
Treatment includes acute medications for pain relief during an attack (such as triptans) and preventive medications for those with frequent or severe migraines. Lifestyle changes and non-pharmacological approaches are also considered. Please note that Sumatriptan is not to be used as a preventative medication.
